Many years ago, the Mullane family established a scholarship at DeSales in the name of their father Jack, a graduate of DeSales Catholic High School and the University of Notre Dame, and a longtime supporter of Catholic education. This annual generous gift is awarded to a student who will be attending a Catholic high school. In sponsoring a DeSales graduate through this scholarship, Jack Mullane’s memory and generous spirit are honored.  After reviewing this year’s applicants, the Mullane family has chosen to give two $2,000 awards this year. “The Mullane family does so much for DeSales and Catholic education.  These scholarships are just one example of their commitment and generosity,” Principal Karen Rahill said of the annual award.

Current DeSales 8th grader, Lucas McCabe is one of this year’s Mullane Family Scholarship recipients. Lucas is a member of the National Honor Society, St. Francis Society, a member of the morning announcement crew and the basketball, bowling, baseball and soccer teams.  Lucas’ classmates describe him as outgoing, athletic, hard-working and a very good student.

Lucas said of his experience attending DeSales Catholic School “I have appreciated the academic and athletic opportunities that I have had here at DeSales. I have learned so much through sports and in the classroom from my teachers.”

Lucas is the son of Jeff & Kristen McCabe of Lockport.  Lucas will continue his education in the fall at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute.

Fellow DeSales 8th Grader, Addison Pursel was also named as a Mullane Family Scholarship recipient. Addison has been a valued member of the DeSales Musical cast, the St. Francis Society, Student Council and the Running Club. Addison’s classmates recognize her kind nature, work ethic and sense of humor.

Addison reflected on this scholarship recognition saying, “I am grateful for being selected for the Mullane Family Scholarship. I will strive to continue to be an example and reflection of the values I have learned at DeSales.”

Addison is the daughter of Jillian McDonald and Aidan Pursel and the stepdaughter of Patrick McDonald and Jordan Pursel.  She will attend the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart for high school in the fall.

Citing that both Lucas and Addison have excelled both academically and civically, Principal Rahill commented “Lucas and Addison have grown so much in their time here at DeSales.  I am proud of all they have accomplished and know they are both well-prepared for the challenges of high school.”
