As the Start of Something Great, DeSales Catholic School believes in educating the whole child. While traditional academic subjects and faith-based education form the foundation of our curriculum, encore classes including art, music, physical education, technology and Spanish, greatly enhance a student’s DeSales education of the mind, body and soul.
Art
Using a variety of different mediums, including painting, clay, charcoal drawing and paper mache, students at DeSales express their creativity and explore their imagination in weekly art classes.
Spanish
DeSales Catholic School students begin working on the basics of Spanish language and culture in the first days of Preschool. While younger students learn to have fun with the language by playing games, singing songs and exploring basic vocabulary, they are challenged to think in a more bi-lingual nature. As they move through the elementary grades, students continue to review previous knowledge while pushing their cultural awareness and sensitivity further into the Spanish culture. Foreign language instruction culminates in eighth grade with students studying Spanish I as a full-time subject, taken five day a week.
Library
The Library Media Center at DeSales is a welcoming place filled with constant activity. Our students use the library media center and its materials for both classroom educational requirements and reading enjoyment. The library collection includes over 10,000 books, magazines, audio-visual materials and online subscription databases.
Music
DeSales Catholic School believes that all students have an innate musical ability and it is our responsibility to provide them with the opportunity to discover it. As our students move through music class they will face three different areas of study:
Music theory ~ Here, students learn the rudiments of how music works and explore basic music composition
Music appreciation ~ Student are exposed to and learn to enjoy a wide range of music genres and composers.
Music performance ~ Students are given the opportunity to perform by singing and playing musical instruments, both in the classroom and in public performances.
Physical Education
DeSales Catholic School’s Physical Education (P.E.) program is designed to provide students to grow through and participate in a comprehensive program that includes the development of gross motor skills, skill development, individual and team based sports, and lifelong physical fitness skills. Students receive training in rules, skills and strategies associated with a variety of different sports. DeSales P.E. program promotes good sportsmanship, cooperation, leadership, fair play and friendly competition.
All DeSales seventh grade students take health class, which conducted in conjunction with the P.E. program, provides a solid foundation for life long fitness. It is designed to provide students with the tools necessary to make well-grounded decisions in topics such as wellness, the dangers of tobacco use, skeletal system, muscular system, diet and fitness.
