DeSales Students’ Go Above and Beyond with Local Food Drive
Lockport, NY: The students of DeSales Catholic School kicked off Catholic Schools Week in early February with a service project to benefit a local food pantry. Catholic Schools Week is a week-long tradition celebrating school spirit and highlighting the importance of service to others.
This year Catholic schools’ week at DeSales included themed dress up days, door decorating contests, a virtual pep-rally, and the school-wide service project. The events are thoughtfully planned by the DeSales Student Council.
The Catholic Schools week fun doesn’t stop at Decades Day; this year’s theme was, “Catholic Schools…Faith, Service and Excellence.”
DeSales students took the service portion of the theme head on.
The school wide service project for 2021 was a food drive to support the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, with a goal of collecting 500 food and hygiene items.
At the beginning of the week, DeSales friend and food pantry volunteer, Mrs. Brenda Ulrich talked with students over Zoom about how their donations would make a difference in the Lockport Community.
By the end of Catholic Schools week, DeSales had collected 649 non-perishable food and hygiene items for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.
One DeSales student summed up the service project best.
Daniel Rahill, an 8th grader at DeSales, said, “The pep-rally has always been one of my favorite parts about Catholic schools week; but this year it was the food drive because I know I’m helping others and making a difference in my community.”
