In December, NYS designated both the City and Town of Lockport a Covid yellow zone. Schools in yellow zones must test 20% of in-person students, faculty and staff following the zone designation to remain open for in person instruction.

Students, Faculty and Staff at DeSales Catholic School took Covid tests on Sunday, January 3rd to achieve the 20% testing requirement in an effort to remain open for in person instruction. DeSales secured funding for the required tests from two anonymous donors. Jamie Latko, RPH, owner of Niagara Apothecary tested 79 students, staff and faculty for the Catholic elementary school on Sunday.

Based on the testing, DeSales current positivity rate is at 2.3%, well under the current Niagara County infection rate. Based on the results of this testing, DeSales will continue to remain open for in-person instruction. School resumed from Christmas Break on Monday. Principal, Karen Rahill commented on the testing; “I am grateful to our students and staff for giving up a Sunday morning to participate in our Covid testing at DeSales so that we could reopen without interruption.”

Since September, DeSales Catholic School has offered their students the option for 5 days a week, in-person instruction or the option to learn remotely.

DeSales is a regional Catholic school educating students from Early Childhood through eighth grade.  Located on Chestnut Ridge Road in Lockport, DeSales welcomes families of all faiths from throughout Eastern Niagara and Orleans counties.  For more information visit www.desalescatholicschool.org
